fun in the bedroom

this is not that kind of blog, so get your minds out of the gutter (as my mom likes to say).

my feeling is, if you're not enjoying some good laughs in your marriage, you're headed for trouble. so, more for my amusement than mike's, i decided to short sheet the bed. i've never done it before and was inspired by my sisters who recently short-sheeted craig's bed when he came home to visit. i actually had to do this twice, because the first time i ended up short-sheeting myself. i made the bed all up, forgot that i had done it, and ended up going to bed way before mike. climbed into bed and muttered, "what the heck?". redid it again yesterday (and forgot about it again...super bad short-term memory, eh?), but luckily mike got into bed before me...sucess! and i laughed!

what do you do for laughs?

first fiesta

malacai requested a mexican fiesta for his first birthday. being the mexican food addict that i am, i was really glad he came up with that idea. we had lots of fun with lots of family. (and i cannot believe this, but we did not get one picture of our scrumptious food table...and there was some good food! nor are there any pictures of all the "decorations", and i have some awesome fiesta-themed items [especially my dinnerware]...too bad!)

our little mexican turns one!
(he hated this sombrero...could not get him to keep it on for more than 2 seconds)

lincoln insisted on opening every present with cai and then would promtly take it as soon as it was unwrapped

this little mexican had no problems posing in the sombrero

the free cake (did you know tops will give you a free cake for your baby's first birthday?)
i always feel a bit guilty about getting a cake from a bakery and not making one, but it's free, how can you pass up a free cake? and most likely, it's the only year they'll get one from a store. except if they want a cookie cake...because no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to make a cookie cake like mrs. fields can. just like you will never be able to make from-scratch brownies that taste better than the boxed version. i am also guilty of buying ice cream cakes - i love ice cream cakes - you can make super good ones though so i really have no excuse except for laziness for buying these.

¡feliz cumpleanos baby!

a st. patty's party

every year, aunt jan throws lots & lots of amazing parties. with lots & lots of yummy food. being irish by marriage, i guess i have to claim the st. patrick's day party as my favorite. we have corned beef & cabbage at this party, and i actually do like this. (for my dish though, i just stuck with the green theme and brought guacamole - what every good irish woman eats, right?).
a few highlights from this year's party:

when mom was unloading her dishes she accidently dropped part of her jello shamrock into the green punch...love lyndsay in this pic!

this is why i love aj's parties...the small touches every where -
cabbage-wrapped silverware!

my sweet irish baby

could not get the two of them to cooperate for the picture...
hoodies are from marmo & jojo from their trip to ireland!

sweet, sweet tater-tot

what i've been doing

i haven't been as faithful in my blogging as i had been doing (so far, 11 posts in march alone...holy cats!). here's why (aside from normal things that you don't want to read about/see pictures of...like me working, or me changing diapers, or me pleading with little people to eat, or me pleading with a little person to pee-pee in the potty, or me just sitting with a dazed look on my face because i have a two year old and a one year old...):

i was hanging out with these super cool cats as much as i could while they were around. we did super fun things like play games, laugh, take silly pictures of ourselves (we love our 'chothers), eat lots of yummy food, laugh, go to parties, play games, talk, laugh...

welcome home to laurdie, craiggers and gingy!
(no, of course those aren't their real names)

i look soo hot in baby ties

on the way to the relevant worship concert

thoughts that crossed my mind while browsing through these pictures:
• why didn't i get the skinny gene??!
• lyndsay's hair cut is so stinkin' cute it makes me want to chop mine and give up on this whole grow-out-my-hair process

hello, we have no upper leeps
(craig looked at me while we were posing and said, "mand, you don't look any different". yea. nice. because i really don't have an upper lip when i smile.)

bunny shoulders
(yea, it's the new thing, start doing it)

one year ago today

i woke up very early and thought to myself, "i need to shave today because today's the day he's coming" (because it's like a requirement, right? must have freshly shaven legs while giving birth). it must have been mother's intuition that i knew. after completing the required shaving, i packed up my hospital bag, but did not want to bring it with me into town...i thought if i brought it it would jinx me and then he wouldn't come that day. and i really, really needed him out.
so like any other monday, lincoln was dropped off at mimi's house and i went on to church to do the deposit (church rule: always finish your volunteer work before going into labor). i then headed over to my scheduled visit with the best mid-wife ever (she really is), hoping that she'd tell me to go to the hospital immediately, even though i wasn't even having any contractions. no such luck. she did however, poke around a lot (really fun for those that have never had the pleasure) and told me that might help bring it on. went back to my mom's and got "crampy". even though this was my second baby, i felt like a first-timer in the "going into labor" process because with late linco-bean, i was induced, everything was done at the hospital, and i was never "on my own". so i still was undecided as to whether i was going into labor or just developing labor-longing-pains.
finally decided this was it. called mike to tell him, only mike had a slight problem of his own. flat tire on his van. which meant no way to get into town. (new future-baby-daddy rule: have your tires checked completely and thorougly at least two weeks before your baby's due date). my dad is then sent out to pick up mike and bring him in.
mike arrives in town, we head back over to see the mid-wife where again, i get the oh-so-nice poking and prodding. and finally, finally am told this is it and to get to the hospital. yippee!
a mere 4 hours after arriving at the hospital, we welcome our little cookie (what linc called him) into the world. and i was so proud to have a big baby that had lots of hair. and a little concerned that he somehow wasn't ours because he was so dark. well, like reddish-yellow dark*. but he's ours. and he's still big! but with not so much hair, and not so much dark.
happy first birthday malacai mitchell!

*funny story: we joked that malacai wasn't ours because he was so dark and looked a bit indian. the day after malacai was born, caitlin & i were sitting in my hospital room when the door opened and an indian man walked in, looked around and left. cait and i looked at each other and said, "he's looking for his baby!" and laughed ourselves silly. or maybe i just laughed myself silly in my "hey-i'm-not-preggers-anymore" euphoria.

there's a super cute video of cai on lyndsay's blog - check it

pining

hello 59 degrees,

it's been a while since we've seen you around here. we so enjoyed having you come to visit. in fact, i think we're ready for you to stay; maybe even turn it up a few notches. i have a feeling that it's a little too soon for you to stay for too long though. i'm thinking next time you should bring your friend sunshine with you. it'd make for a really pleasant time. but it's cool that you came at all, so whatever you like, just stick around. i made sure that we took full advantage of your visit.

see how much those boys enjoyed you? well, i hope we'll be seeing each other again real soon. you know you're welcome at my door anytime. please hurry back.

love,
manda

and so it begins

got this in the mail the other day. we decided to go with the 1974 version because we like to kick it old school. i've just started reading it and find it highly amusing, being from '74 and all. so even if i can't potty train linc in less than a day, at least i'll have had a good read! so far my favorite excerpt (other than reading about the "profoundly retarded") is:
"When you will be praising your child during training, you will be telling him not only that you are pleased but also that others too will be pleased. To facilitate this, use the Friends-Who-Care procedure. Make up a list of all the persons and friends your child admires, such as Daddy, his big brothers and sisters, his grandfather, his aunt, the mailman, and the baby-sitter."
um, the mailman?? is there something mommy needs to tell daddy when we're including the mailman in the potty training process? i guess mailmen were the superheros of the 70's. lincoln probably does admire our mailman, since he drives a pickup.
the illustrations in this book are also fantastic; maybe i'll share a couple of those too at some point (that's a lot of work though, scanning and all).
i must get reading. and start looking for a doll - "the doll should be of the type that wets". anyone have one i can borrow?
anyone want to be included on the "Friends-Who-Care" list?

vintage walker?

i guess lincoln decided it was high time (isn't that a funny expression? now it doesn't even sound right because i've over thought it) malacai started walking.

the chair is actually linc's time-out chair and was mine (or one of my siblings...who really knows) from childhood. and i love that linc had to kick the real walker out of the way. and poor little cai didn't really want to be doing this and kept putting his head down and linc thought it was funny that he was "laying down".

not fun

my companions for the weekend were a box of tissues, lots of cough drops and lots of tea. i spent the entire weekend in bed. this cold ranked in my top 3 worst colds. i never get severe colds and rarely get the "seal bark" cough (the first day of my coughing i remarked to mike, "i sound like lyndsay" - who always seemed to have the croup cough throughout childhood). i had it all this weekend. i'm thankful for my wonderful husband who waited on me and took care of the kiddos and my mommy who also came to help out and made me chicken noodle soup.

also - cannot believe it's already march!

i failed the third grade

on this test

ugh...it's all those mid-west states.

also, it can be a little finicky. so put your pointer right over the state, not a smidge off, or you too could fail 3rd grade.
